The second Wheelers club run of the year attracted a very healthy group of 21 riders, with a couple of new faces making an appearance as guests. Hello to Sam and Karl (actually his second club run) if you’re reading this.
We were also honoured to have the presence of none other than Jeremy Rees, star of this month’s Cyclist magazine article on riding in the Gower. Worth a look for the stunning pictures of places such as Caswell and Bracelet Bay. Makes it look like the Mediterranean. Thankfully no close-ups of the star rider.
We set off from the Liberty, over to Carmarthen Road, through Waunarlwydd and into Gowerton. A good steady pace down through Penclawdd, Old Walls and eventually Burry Green.
The blue rinse brigade were out in force on various parts of the ride, especially on the narrow lanes of Gower. The Sunday drivers showed their appreciation of a large cycling group (who always obey the Highway Code, of course) by testing to see if their car horns worked at regular intervals.
A quick stop at Burry Green to re-group and determine the route and then off up the steady climb up Cefn Bryn from the Fairyhill side. Here, one of the guest riders, 14-year-old Sam, managed to drop Andy M without too much effort. Some would say an easy victory.
Momentary confusion in Reynoldston whether to carry on the B4271 or join the South Gower Road was quickly resolved, and we headed up Cefn Bryn once again. At the top it was decided to play the ‘freewheeling’ game down the hill past Broad Pool, as there was a fair tail wind. The aim being to see who could get the furthest with only gravity’s assistance. Not sure who won but Louis M was seen to turn the pedals a few times. Never one to resist a KOM, eh Louis?
A fast pace down Fairwood Common towards the airport and then a sharp right down through Lunnon. Good to see John F had lost none of his bravado by launching himself with reckless abandon down the steep hill to Shepherds. Thankfully the notoriously gravelly/mossy/wet surface didn’t catch anyone out.
A long stop in Shepherd’s cafe for coffee and cake and then back through the lanes via Parkmill, Kittle, Mayals and then back to Swansea, with various riders peeling off at different points. Some even going on to do heroic loops up to Ponty and back!
Good to see a few faces who hadn’t been out for a while. Welcome back Mark N, Simeon D and Chris McA. And of course that wee Scottish chappie Jonny who just can’t bear to stay away for too long.
According to El Capitan, Trevor (who did the names in the cafe, so don’t blame me!), the riders/points this week were:
LIST OF RIDERS
4 Points: PAUL E, JEREMY D, PHIL G, ANDY D, ANDY M, MARK N, TREVOR L
3 Points: IAN W, NIC C, BOB H, STEVE P, SIMEON D, JOHN F
2 Points: JEREMY R, CHRIS McA, JONNY W, DAVE G, LOUIS M
1 Point: MIKE B

This Sunday’s club run (January 18th) is Ferryside. But with the weather as it is will we even make it to Kidwelly? Meet at the Liberty, 9.30am.
