A grand total of six riders braved the May rain to take on the epic ride to the Gold Mines at Pumpsaint. Only we didn’t. We bottled it and decided a trip round Gower, including a few choice hills, would be much nicer considering the weather.
From The Liberty the group, including guest rider Jed from west London (a London Dynamo member on holiday, staying in Llangennith), went up through Brynhyfryd and then Waunarlwydd. On through the downpours to Gowerton and the North Gower Road. A quick decision to go up The Wern saw John F just take the grimpeur’s prize at the top in Three Crosses. He’d obviously shot his load and decided to go home at this point.
The five remaining riders then cycled across a bleak Welshmoor down to Llanrhidian, taking a right turn to admire Weobley Castle (very Gothic through the mist and rain). A fast ascent up the hill past Cheriton was matched by a fast descent to Burry Green. Then up over Cefn Bryn and left onto the South Gower Road.
Nic C put the hammer down (no doubt inspired by his new Garmin Edge 510) and dragged us through Nicholaston and Penmaen. Paul E then led the charge down the wet and dark Parkmill descent, where the sun finally decided to make a late appearance.
Jason K turned off at Vennaway Lane, and the rest decided on a detour via Bishopston, Caswell and Langland, taking in all the wonderful hills and beaches along the way (mostly to try to impress our guest holidaymaker). After quick wee stop at Castlemare (no coffee and cake – too expensive!), the group headed back along Mumbles Road, saying au revoir to Paul E who turned up Mayals Road. So despite the weather it turned into a good ride. Thanks guys! Paul E.
