There were 14(?) riders out for the club run on Sunday 21st July 2013 to Talsarn. Talk at the club prior to leaving focused upon the Tour and the returning “grimpeurs” who’d taken on the Alps. A welcome visit from Gerald on his motorbike (complete with stinky jacket) and the return of Jason K after his back op prompted a photo, and for proof of club kit.
We set out through the enterprise zone, Ynsytawe and Clydach before moving onto the Swansea valley road and into a nagging headwind. Dan G tested his own legs before turning off just before Ystradgynlais.
Up towards Crai where Dave G and Andy turned off. As we headed down into Defynnog Trevor, Louis and John raced for the sign (im getting to old for that nonsense) with Trevor taking it. We decided to stop at the café in the petrol station on the A40 and good job too as it had enormous slices of chocolate cake. Talk of Rhys and his close shave with a French machete wielding farmer kept us amused in the sunshine.
Back on the road and with a tailwind we passed through Trecastle and onto the side roads up to Talsarn. On top we encountered a herd of rampaging horses who decided to run along as if we were the pro peleton. Past the red Kite café (which is for sale) and down onto the mountain road.
After a quick regroup at the bottom Black Mountain beckoned, with Louis first to the top. Andy M pushed on to get to work here. Down the other side and due to the hot weather we picked up some water in the Brynamman petrol station before turning left and down towards Abernant. Right past the rubbish dump and up the ándbrake climb which was scorching as it was sheltered from the winds. At the top we encountered our first set of horse flies (it was not the last). Right and down into the dip before the steep climb out to the top of Scotch pines, where Jason decided to turn right and go into Ammanford. Anyway we broke up from here as people made their own way home.
