Club Run on July 20th

Eleven riders braved the ongoing and rather unusual July heat wave to take part in this weeks (amended) club run, which saw a repeat visit to the Brecon Mountain Centre. Three guests helped to bolster numbers, Niall, currently living in London and on holiday in Wales; Chris, his second time out after a successful club run last week (wow, a guest rider out two weeks in a row, what are we doing wrong?) and James, who’s ‘enjoyed’ a few Thursday night Gower chaingangs. Chris and James both living in Swansea Marina but didn’t know each other until today. How romantic.

After waiting for Trevor and John F to join us at the obligatory 9.02am, we set off up the usual route to Crai, passing through Llansamlet, Ynystawe and Pontardawe. The lesser-spotted Jeremy R (not the fat one!), disappeared here after putting a few noses out of joint in only the way he can.

The peloton stuck together up the valley, until we were in spitting distance of the reservoir, where guest Niall showed why he had a fancy aero Canyon bike and left everyone for dust. After regrouping at the top, Dave G, Bob, Andy and John F decided to turn back. Dave no doubt not wanting to push his luck with the missus after last weeks extended outing. Did you get back in time this week Dave?

A slower than usual pace down the valley saw a two man sprint between Trev and Paul E for the Crai sign, won, for a change, by Paul. Trev getting revenge by sitting on Paul’s wheel and then bagging the Defynnog sign.

We decided to go the the mountain centre at this point, as no one was too sure of the club run route. Once again, guest riders Niall and James got to the top of Prime Hill first, showing up the rest of the old timers.

After recharging the batteries in the shadow of Pen-y-fan at the mountain centre, it was down the hill towards Libanus and right up to Storey Arms. The group actually stayed together from this point onwards, which is what club runs must have been like in the good-old-days.

A really good pace all the way down the valley, through Penderyn and onto the Rhigos Road. It was cat-and-mouse all the way down Cefn Rhigos between Paul and Trev, with Paul just pipping Trev round the last bend into town. The group hammered along the TT road to Aberdulais, with yet another two-up sprint for the sign. Paul powered past Trev, with the Trevinator making up all sorts of excuses about sore legs from a recent job…

From there it was a nice social pace to Neath Abbey, Skewen and home.

About 65 miles club to club.
