There were 23 riders out today for the first club run of Sept 2013, including a number of return and new guests: Father and son Phil and Adam returning for their 3 / 4 ride, Stam for his second club ride & new attendees Ian K, Gary, Dean and Rod. A N Other for his 2nd / 3rd ride?
We set off from the stadium in the cold but sunny weather, picking up Lee P on the old road to Morriston. Through Morriston cross and into Pontardawe as the weather started to warm up in the sunshine. On to Trebanos and Pontardawe where we picked up Carl W at the junction (having a lie in is cheating Carl !!)
Up the hill out of Pontardawe regrouping as we went half way up and then at the top next to Trevor’s lockup, where Nic decided to water the plants. On towards GCG where Andy D went straight on as the group turned right towards Brynamman and the start of the climb. The group fractured at the rugby club but regrouped at the mini roundabout as a set of temporary traffic lights blocked our way (or gave you a rest depending on your point of view). As the lights changed we set off again as everyone made their own way to the top. Regrouping at the top, Andy D showed his face, having realised he had taken a wrong turn in GCG – and no beers last night either!
Down the other side and on towards Llangadog, where Andy D had a mechanical and turned back, before we turned left at the bridge towards Bethlehem. We were greeted with a blocked off bridge which turned out to be no bridge at all, the old one having been knocked down for replacement. Stam had a puncture here after crossing the temporary structure and added insult to injury by replacing it with a faulty second tube (d’oh).
Once we were back on the road we headed into Bethlehem (no comment Ian W) and the undulating road to Ffairfach where Lee P pipped Alan C for the sign. We regrouped in Ffairfach after Carl W had a chain issue, before deciding to head into Llandeilo for a café stop.
We found a little café who were shocked to be swamped by 20+ cyclists but served up cracking cake with a smile. Shame they aren’t open through the winter. Talk at the café stop was on club kit and membership, as well as the route home.
After setting off again we decided to take the road home to Ammanford via Llandybie. The pace picked up towards the Ammanford sign, which Trevor took from a number of chasers. At Ammanford a few riders turned off towards Garnant whilst the rest of us pushed on to the Betws road and Pontardulais. The group split again at Pontardulais for those heading west of Swansea. The rest headed out of Pontardulais and up the naggy Felindre road and steep sharp climb out the other side, before splitting again at Morriston as people headed home.
