There where 15 riders out today for the wet, windy start from the Liberty Stadium. Making a return was Edwardo from sunny Brazil (welcome back) for his first club run for a long while.
We all headed out towards Brynhyfryd, onto Fforest-fach left off the main road by Tesco down to Swansea Sound. Speed picked up along bypass towards Loughor where Ian and Jeremy pushed off the front, no response from the group at this point, then Mark N and Edwardo tried to catch them. Onto Loughor bridge in to a head wind making it impossible to bridge the gap, Ian taking the sign, well done mate unlucky its winter session, so no points sorry! Simon H had to turn back at this point, still feeling the effects of his throat virus. The rest of us carried on along the coast road and on to the millennium coastal path, rain jackets off as the weather started drying out. Through Buryport and back on to the main road to Kidwelly with Ian and Trevor doing the work at front pulling the rest of us along. Into Kidwelly, left onto cycle path, into the lanes to Ferryside, I think the farmer has got extra cows this year judging by the amount of cow muck all over the road.
Time for a café stop at Ferryside with Mr happiness himself (the café owner!).
All fuelled we headed back on the road, Dave G, Simon D, Phil N turned back at this point. With the sky looking dark, we headed left along the flat, the up the long climb heading out of Ferryside to join the A484 (main road). Turning left followed by a sharp right with Phil G using tactics to get the Llandyfaelog sign. We pushed on up the long climbs to Pontyates, continuing straight, Jeremy took a different route up to Pontyberem where he would meet us, unfortunately the route we took didn’t go to Pontyberem (Sorry Jeremy!) Up the next climb onto the B4309 to Five Roads, then left down towards Llanon where the signs showed 4 miles to Llanon. We headed up through a lot of empty back roads until we reached the next junction where the sign was showing 4 miles to Llanon (Ground hog day or what?). Finally we made it into Llanon, with the group all together we headed left towards Hendy on the fast roller coaster, the group staying close until 3 riders break of the front for the Hendy sign, Phil G, Trevor L and John F with John just too strong for the oldies and taking the sign. Stopping at the end to regroup and finally meeting up with Jeremy, we headed up into Pontardulais. At the lights the group splits again for those heading home towards Mumbles with the remainder of us tackling the final climbs towards Felindre and then heading home. What a tough, wet and yet surprisingly warm ride.
Total distance was 62 miles (we must have taken a few wrong turns, missing the experience of Mark W)
4 Points – Phil G, Mark N, Paul E, Trevor L, Ian W
3 Points – Jason K, Andy M, John F, Jeremy, Simon H
2 Points – Edwardo, Adam N
1 Point – Phil N, Dave G, Simon D
