There were 17 riders out today for the club run from Rhossili in wet and foggy conditions. Guests were Simon (been a few times) and new rider Chris Regis, a personal trainer and spin instrutor from the YMCA, plus the proud user of a WattBike Pro within the YMCA !! Guest Simon unofficially joined the club today, he just needs a membership form.
Everyone seemed to remember meeting at the Liberty Stadium for the first time, where talk turned to the spiked moustached head of Robbie James and Ian W’s adventures with Locktite.
We set off after a short delay to see if anyone had turned up at the wrong place and after negotiating the roundabouts went through Brynhyfred and up to Carmarthen Road. Down towards Gowerton where the lack of the “Capt’n” meant we took a slight detour through Gowerton cross instead of along the bypass. We moved onto the North Gower Road and into a headwind, where Steve Pain did his usual trick of pushing along the front. John F turned off at the petrol station just after the caravan park.
We passed a veteran cyclist as we headed down towards Fairyhill, who had his shifters in the ends of his drops and feet pinned to his pedals by toe clips. Down the hill and up the other side before turning left at Burry Green.
Adam had a mechanical through the lanes and after he fixed it, Gethin L turned off at the fork on the South Gower Road. The pace picked up after the turn towards Rhossili with firstly the Secretary and then Trevor our Chairman and Mark N pushing on the pace. The group split as we got closer to the cafe and as ever Middleton sorted out the contenders. Mark Noall found himself on the front (where he didnt want to be) and after pulling new member Simon and Phil G up the slope, Phil G jumped and held out around the twists to the cafe stop.
Talk in the cafe focused on the WattBike and Paul Edwards falling asleep on the bus after Friday night, whilst eyes focused on the girl working in the cafe !! More summer rides to Rhossilli I say.
After the cafe stop the tailwind helped push us back the way we came and after a short stop for Trevor to fix his stem bolts, we sped through the South Gower road, past the airport and into Killay. We took a little detour on the way back, turning left just after the school and into Tycoch, before turning left at Swansea college and on to Carmarthen Road. We lost a couple of riders here who either missed the turn or decided against it?? The groups split up at the Marquis Arms as everyone headed for home.
Total miles was 44 for me.
