There were 19 riders out today for the perfect sunny winter days start at the Liberty Stadium. Welcome back to Rhys. Hearing from Trevor that Gelli Aur café was closed, due to the ownership of the café been taken over, it was time for a change of café stop. It was decided to go to Carreg Cennen Castle. So we set off riding through the enterprise park, up Swansea Vale on to Chemical Rd, small climb up taking us past Morriston Hospital at a steady pace then we turned right at junction down the bypass to Penllergaer, where Louis turned up… after having a mechanical on the way he missed us at the Liberty, so had to play catch up, we all know how hard that is, lucky he is fit and by that I mean got good fitness, before you all start with the comments!!!
So that makes 20 riders. Off Penllergaer roundabout down to Pontlliw and through Pontadulais, Lance turning back at this point, up the hill then turning right at top, with Dave G turning back at this point. Through Fforest on to Llanedi, the group splitting up at this point, pace picking up and too many ups and downs, we all regrouped at the junction with the main road. Taking a right at the junction then a left through Capel Hendre up a small climb we all turned right on to Llandybie. At Llandybie cross roads Paul E found a workman to chat up, don’t think he had any luck? So we all headed straight across junction on to Kings Rd and up the long dragging climbs to the café stop. (Sorry Bob couldn’t remember when you turned back)
After some coffee and cake and Phil G’s best cheese and ham toasted sandwich he ever had, it was back on road. Down to the end of the lane with Andy at the front turning left, may be not being told the plan or maybe heading home? sorry Andy. The rest of us turned right up the hill, heading towards the Black mountains, it was a straight run all the way to the main Rd, turning right towards the start of the Black.
The pace starting to picking up again for the race to the top. Louis and Rhys pushing ahead being chased by Lee, Leon ,Mark N, Phil G and ‘The Machine’ Trevor. Louis and Lee keeping the gap and making the top first. Strongly followed by Trevor, Leon and Rhys who had their own battle going on. In another group Phil G just edging Mark N to top. We all regrouped at top then headed down the long fast decent to the bottom.
On the very last bend Lee P hit the barrier, throwing him to the tarmac with excessive damage to his bike and kit, Lee seemed OK, he got away with just a few cuts and bruises. After a long stop trying to get is bike back together it was time to call in international rescue to pick him up at the roundabout at the bottom. Some pushed on home with a few of us waiting with Lee till his wife arrived. Hope you are back on road soon. Then back on the road home for the rest with Trevor pulling us all the way back at a fast pace.
